Health Care Background:
From 1971-1999 Ken Schueler was a “primary health care” consultant to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), WHO (World Health Organization) and the US Government, specializing in the development of innovative medical devices to reduce adult and infant mortality. Working with clinicians from UNICEF & WHO as well as manufacturing Research & Development engineers, Mr. Schueler was instrumental in the development of the SoloShotTM Auto-Destruct Syringe and BCG Syringe (Becton Dickinson), a tropicalized Oxygen Concentrator (Respironics/ Healthdyne), Bebi-WeyTM low birthweight scale (Health-O-Meter/ Sunbeam), and All AmericanTM Portable Steam Autoclaves (Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry).

As Director of HKS Patient Advocates (est. 2000), Ken Schueler conducts a comprehensive search and analysis of full-text medical journal articles covering the latest treatment options for patients with complex and chronic diseases, especially: cancer (breast, prostate, ovarian, lung, lymphoma, colorectal, brain, bladder, etc.), neurological (e.g., Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, CIDP, memory, chronic pain, migraine), gastrointestinal (inflammatory bowel disease, GERD, hepatitis, etc.), auto-immune (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc.), pulmonary (asthma, COPD, etc.), metabolic (hyperthyroidism, diabetes, lipidemia, etc.), cardiovascular (e.g., stroke, hypertension, coronary artery disease) diseases, etc.

Mr. Schueler is considered a specialist in researching “evidence-based medicine”(EBM). EBM is a relatively recent development in medicine in which experts within individual medical specialties (oncology, neurology, cardiology, endocrinology, surgery, etc.) define “best practices”. They accomplish this through a meta-analysis of multiple clinical trials, comparing the success or failure of new versus old therapeutic drugs, techniques or treatments. They then publish their results as an “expert consensus” on “best care” and this is usually reflected in new “Practice Guidelines” which define the most current diagnostic methods (including staging of disease) and the most effective treatment protocols for a particular disease or disorder.

Mr. Schueler is not a physician- he is a Patient Advocate. As a Patient's Personal Case Manager and Medical Navigator, Mr. Schueler has developed a reputation for being both professionally courteous and pro-active in improving communications between the physicians on a patient's health care team.
As a member of the American Academy on Physician and Patient, Mr. Schueler has been a leader in strengthening patients’ collaborations and partnerships with their doctors and other health care providers. See Mr. Schueler’s comments in this issue of the Annals of Family Medicine: http://annalsfm.highwire.org/cgi/eletters/1/1/52#50.

Mr. Schueler has also established direct relationships with leading oncology researchers who are conducting relevant clinical trials in the US, Europe and Japan. Within the U.S. patients of Mr. Schueler are currently being treated at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Dana Farber, Stanford, UCSF, MD Anderson, Memorial Sloan Kettering, NYU, Columbia Presbyterian, Weill/Cornell, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Children’s Memorial Hospital (Chicago), University of Colorado, University of Virginia, Duke,etc..

Having undergone his own experience in 1994 with Stage IV Lymphoma, Ken Schueler has an intimate knowledge of and a deep compassion for the daily struggles involved in coping with a serious illness such as cancer.
